Various Battalion Nominal Rolls/ Unit
Histories
20th Brigade Unit
Histories
These provide some different views of similar experiences from units
that operated together in the 20th Brigade of the
9th Division. Quotes are from the
hyperlinked site (may have to search some
sites eg AWM).
I have a personal copy of each of "Caveant
Hostes"and "Bravery Over Blunder", and am happy to
search them for information
.
Recently, I
obtained a copy of the 2/17th Bn unit
history, and it does provide a significant amount of information on
the 20th Brigade and the 2/15th Bn
activities. I can recommend it highly. However it may be
difficult to find other copies of this and the other unit
histories.

Fearnside, G.H. (ed.), Bayonets
abroad: a history of the 2/13th Battalion AIF in the Second World
War
Swanbourne, WA : John Burridge Military
Antiques, 1993.
Originally published in 1953.
The editor brings together a collection of
accounts by different authors, all members of the battalion,
describing different periods and aspects of the unit's history.
Includes chapters on the 2/13th's experience of troopships and the
work of the battalion's Ladies' Auxiliary. Another chapter pays
tribute to Albert Chowne, who distinguished himself with the
battalion before going on to win a VC, awarded posthumously, with
another battalion.

"This is a unique and
powerful visual history of the men who fought in the 9th
Australian Division. Many never before published
photographs, some from veterans' private collections,
illustrate dramatic and confronting stories of Tobruk, El
Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo. The 9th Division gained renown as 'Rats of
Tobruk' in 1941, were eulogised as that magnificent 9th' by
General Montgomery after the battle of El Alamein in 1942
and drew praise from their formidable opponent, Field
Marshal Rommel. In 1943, the
Division joined the war against Japan and served with
distinction in New Guinea-under- taking the largest
amphibious landing by Australian forces since Gallipoli- and
in two controversial campaigns in Borneo.
The photographs in this
book show the human face of war but also demonstrate the
Australian digger's ability to find humour in the most
unlikely circumstances." (from War Books
website)

HOWARD, James
QX21613
The AWM has a mug that was
made by a member Corporal James HOWARD QX21513. He
served with the 2/15th Battalion in the Middle East, but he is not
mentioned in the Members List. Apparently he tranferred to
part of the 7th Division in Java during March 1942. He
became a PoW in Changi until his release in 1945.
It seems
that there might have been other
2/15th Bn members who were with him in Java.
MENEREY, James SH

The AWM has a powder
compact made by Private James MENEREY QX6715 whilst he was with
the 2/15th Bn in the Middle East.

The AWM has photos of "Jerry",
a monkey which was a mascot of the 2/15th Bn in the Middle
East. Apparently it was "collected"in Tobruk around
September 1941.
